Description
Join our partners at Old North Illuminated for this procession.
On Saturday, June 15 at 2pm, local artist Ifé Franklin, with support from Old North Illuminated, will host an Egun Ancestor Procession at Copp’s Hill Burying Ground, located steps away from Old North Church. Ifé shared this description of the event:
"Egun Ancestor Processions are beautiful community rituals that honor the lives of the enslaved whose burial sites are often forgotten. Each journey offers a healing balm to heavy hearts that are grappling with the difficult history of enslavement. These spaces are a place to share love and respect for those who endured a life of forced servitude. We gather to pray, sing, dance, wail, and shout as we hold the old souls in the highest regard. We create spaces filled with deep appreciation, beauty, and integrity."
The Procession will start on the sidewalk, then participants will sing and enter the burial ground. Participants are free to move at their own pace. We ask the following of the Procession participants: please wear white clothing and bring your own seating. White allies/abolitionists will respectfully follow behind People of Color during the processional. Masking is encouraged.
