Description
As we bring National Park Week to a close in 2025, join a Park Ranger on the front porch of Youngsholm and learn about one of Brigadier General Charles Young's earliest career mentors, Lieutenant John Hanks Alexander.
In June 1887, John Hanks Alexander became the second African American to graduate from West Point, but his career lasted only seven years, as he died of a heart attack in 1894. As he wasn’t the first African American graduate, his accomplishments are often forgotten or overshadowed by his predecessor, Brigadier General Charles Young.
Though his career spanned seven years, his legacy and impact echoes to this day through those he influenced and the programs he began.
#WalkUp to the front porch of Youngsholm and listen to the story of Lieutenant Alexander.
