Description

Program presented in partnership with Eastern National.

While Washington Roebling is best known as chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge, he had a remarkable Civil War service as engineer and scout with the US Army of the Potomac. He refused to allow his fellow soldiers to go anywhere he dared not go himself. It was a practice he continued when building the bridge. He insisted on going down into the caissons his men would be working in, which resulted in his being paralyzed for a decade with the bends. Join author Diane Monroe Smith for a presentation about her book Washington Roebling's Civil War: From the Bloody Battlefield at Gettysburg to the Brooklyn Bridge. Explore the life of this fascinating figure on the eve of the anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville.
