Description
Reginald Butt, District Commander of the American Legion, discusses the founding of the American Legion in March of 1919. This event will take place at Christ Church, 61 East Main Street in Oyster Bay.
Commander Butt will talk on the founding of the American Legion 100 years ago and some of the accomplishments over the last 100 years. He will also discuss the structure of the American Legion and the founding of the local post in Oyster Bay, the Quentin Roosevelt Post #4.
Immediately following the completion of high school in Oyster Bay, Reginald Butt went into the United States Navy, where he stayed until 1976. He then transferred to the Fleet Reserve until 1986, after which he went on to the Retired Rolls. He then started working as an Electronics Engineer Simulation Engineer with a company that built Simulators for the Military. He worked for twenty years on Submarine Ship Control Trainers and then for five more years on UH1 Helicopter trainers. He joined the American Legion 28 years ago. He has served in every position at the post level with 9 years as Commander, as well as serving in all positions at the County level, being County Commander in 2004-05. At present, Reggie Butt is the District Commander, which is made up of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with 126 posts and over 10,500 legionnaires. He has chaired the Oyster Bay Memorial Day Parade for 25 years and the July 4th parade for 23 years.
