Juan Nepomuceno Cortina was a was a Mexican rancher, politician, and military leader. Depending on who you asked, he was also either a criminal or a hero. Cortina enlisted in the Mexican Army at the age of 22 and participated in the opening battles of the U.S.-Mexican War.

The war’s end and the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo resulted in the Cortina family land grant being cut along the new frontier. Anger over the loss of the family’s land boiled over into what is known as the Cortina Wars.

Park volunteer, Jaime Hernandez, will discuss the Cortina Wars and the effect of the U.S.-Mexican War on land grants in the Rio Grande Valley.
