What

Machicomoco is home to a grove of longleaf pine trees, a useful and historic tree that was once widespread across the southeastern United States. Longleaf pines are fire-adapted, and their growth was encouraged by Native peoples who valued them as resin-producers and for their long needles that are ideal for basket-making. Join us for this hands-on workshop where you will create your own basket using pine needles. Requiring only a sewing needle, thick thread, and patience, you can replicate this craft at home with needles you forage in your backyard! All materials will be provided, recommended for ages 14+. The workshop will be led by the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, part of the National Park Service. All materials provided.
