Description
Inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "Christmas Bells," the churches of Harvard Square hope to spread a message of hope and resilience by ringing their bells in unison, at 3 p.m. on Dec. 11th and Dec. 23rd.
Harvard Square local Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the poem during one of the darkest moments in American history, the Civil War. Amidst national and personal tragedy, he heard hope ring in the winter air and wrote the poem, hoping for peace on earth, good-will to all.
The celebration will continue, virtually, with the debut of the video series, “Sacred Spaces and Good Works in Harvard Square.” These videos celebrate the good work the churches do in the Harvard Square community and were narrated by Kevin Tyler, an unhoused gentleman. The music was composed and performed by Cal DiGiovanni, a 13-year old Harvard Square street performer. From Dec. 11-23, these videos will be posted daily on social media at 3 p.m. Churches that are able will ring their bells on the same day their videos debut. Follow @HarvardSQ and @LONGNPS on Facebook for each installment.
Let Hope Ring: Holidays in Harvard Square 2020 festivities are hosted by Harvard Square Business Association, Cambridge Office for Tourism, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and Longfellow House-Washington's HQ NHS.
