Shiloh National Military Park invites the public to take part in a special ranger-led hike on Saturday, September 20, 2025, titled “McCook Takes the Field.”

This five-and-a-half-mile interpretive hike will retrace the footsteps of the Army of the Ohio’s 2nd Division under Brigadier General Alexander McCook—one of the famed “Fighting McCooks.” Participants will follow the division’s path from its dramatic arrival at Pittsburg Landing on the morning of April 7, 1862, to the fierce fighting near Shiloh Church later that afternoon.

Participants should wear sturdy boots or shoes, a hat, and bring at least one liter of water per person. Insect repellant, snacks, and rain gear are also recommended. Please be prepared for uneven ground, brush, fallen trees, creek crossings, and other rugged terrain. Thunderstorms will cancel the program.
