Join Haleakalā National Park and the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project for ʻUaʻu Night on Saturday, April 16. Each spring, ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel, Pterodroma sandwichensis) return to nest in the volcanic cinder of the Haleakalā summit area. While these birds are a rare sight during the day, their strange and iconic calls at night make their presence known.

Between 7 and 9 pm, park rangers, staff from Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, and Friends of Haleakalā volunteers will be at the Haleakalā Visitor Center (9,740 feet) to answer questions about these unique animals and the night skies we share with them. Night vision goggles and thermal imaging cameras will be available.

There is no cost to attend the event. The entrance pass fee will also be waived in honor of the start of National Park Week. Attendees should plan for cold and windy weather and bring red light flashlights.
