Description

Earn your Junior Angler badge and stop by the Chesapeake Bay Roving Ranger during the monthly market days at Deltaville Maritime Museum! Try your hand at fishing and chat with a park ranger about opportunities along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, a more than 3,000 mile trail that celebrates the Bay's Indigenous and maritime history.

Deltaville Maritime Museum has indoor and outdoor exhibits exploring the Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage, from Native American boatbuilding and early navigational technology to beautifully crafted workboats and restored shorelines and oyster reefs that support the ecosystem. We are excited to see their replica of John Smith's shallop, the boat that made the original voyage along what is now the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. On this day in 1608, John Smith was stung and almost killed by a stingray at this spot!

Stop by the Roving Ranger, our mobile visitor center, to learn about this unique history from a park ranger. You can take home trail maps, junior ranger programs, and more!

After enjoying the market and museum, join us on the docks of the museum to try your hand at fishing! Learn from our experienced fishermen how to set up a fishing pole, cast a line, and reel in a catch. Complete the Junior Angler activity book, which introduces young people to the skill of angling and responsible harvesting practices, and take home a special Junior Ranger badge!

The Roving Ranger is now an issuing station for special no-cost national park passes. Eligible visitors include disabled individuals, National Park Service volunteers, current military members, veterans, and Gold Star families.
