Description
After the Hudson Bay Company ceded territory to the US in 1848, Fort Vancouver’s British operations mainly shifted to Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island. From there, European settlement and Colonial authority were expanded, bringing tensions and conflict with Coast Salish peoples of the region. Dr. Colin Grier will discuss this larger process in the context of archaeological and geophysical research at the Indigenous village of Lamalchi Bay, the location of significant hostilities between the Crown and one Salish village in 1863.
Dr. Colin Grier is a professor in the Department of Anthropology at Washington State University Vancouver, and is the Director of the Northwest Coast Archaeology Lab.
