160th Anniversary of Camp Nelson's Establishment

The US Army, by order of Major General Ambrose Burnside, established a supply depot 6-miles south of Nicholasville, KY on April 29, 1863. The site was rapidly constructed and fortified, and later fueled the Army of the Ohio's campaign to liberate East Tennessee in August 1863. Camp Nelson was established during changing tides in the American Civil War; not only in terms of military strategy, but at a time when Kentuckians reckoned with the spread and impact of emancipation. Join NPS staff and partners as we explore the early days of this military base, and set the stage for the national impacts to come.

 

The commemoration features several programs and activities, including ranger-guided tours, living history demonstration, and special site visits.

 

SCHEDULE:
9:00 am - 9:45 am: Camp Dick Robinson Program
10:00 am - 11:00 am: Hickman Bridge Program

 

Visitors will meet NPS staff in the Camp Dick Robinson Parking Lot, located southeast of Bokays Flowers and Gifts on Camp Dick Robinson Road, Lancaster, KY 40444.

 

For the Hickman Bridge Program, visitors will follow the NPS Caravan from Camp Dick Robinson to Camp Nelson RV Park. Address: 27 Chase Ln, Lancaster, KY 40444
