Alaska Geographic Speaker Series: The Science of Hibernating Alaskan Mammals
On most Tuesday evenings throughout the summer, Alaska Geographic hosts an evening speaker series. Join us each week to hear from experts about the latest science and research in the park. Events are free, open to the public, and take place inside the Murie Science and Learning Center at 7 pm.
August 5, 2025: The Science of Hibernating Alaskan Mammals, with Sarah Rice
Biology professor Sarah Rice will discuss the biology, chemistry, and physiology behind the ability of Alaskan mammals to hibernate under extraordinary conditions. Talk will predominantly cover arctic ground squirrel and bear hibernation. Sarah Rice is affiliated with TRiM (Center for Transformative Research in Metabolism) and IAB (Institute of Arctic Biology) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
