Description

Watch artisans at work this week as Desert View's 2022 Cultural Demonstration Series continues, from 9 am to 4 pm on Thursday October 20, and Friday, October 21, 2022.

Darance Chimerica - Hopi Katsina Carver

Ed Kabotie - Hopi Musician/Artist/Educator

Darance Chimerica will be demonstrating how he carves and paints katsina dolls, which he makes from the root of the cottonwood tree.  He creates both the traditional flat-backed kachinas that are hung on a wall, as well as contemporary free-standing kachinas.

Darance has been carving for more than 17 years and has developed his own carving style and technique. His tools are all hand, wood tools, and the paints are all-natural mineral pigment paints that he hand collects on Hopi. Darance says, “the Katsina dolls that I carve are replicas of how I would see them in physical form when they come to visit Hopi. For me, it is something I love to do."

Ed Kabotie is a third-generation artist and musician from the Hopi and Tewa tribes. His music has deep ties to his culture and the lands of his people, as well as environmental justice and other issues faced by many Native Americans.

  • The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.

  • This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
