“Myth Busting: Recent Discoveries about Rochambeau's Army”

Presented by: historian Norman Desmarais (Professor Emeritus, Providence College, R.I.)

The talk focuses upon the diary of Aide-de-Camp, Louis-François-Bertrand, Count de Lauberdière--an officer of the French Army serving under Colonel Rochambeau. Details from Count de Lauberdière's diary contradict popular assumptions and feature events not covered in any other published accounts.

Historian Norman Desmarais offers up a translation of this diary, never before published. The Count de Lauberdière accompanied the French Army for a year in Newport, Rhode Island, and took part in the Virginia campaign culminating in the surrender at Yorktown. His diary covers the entire duration of the French campaigns from 1780 to 1783. Consequently, this talk challenges myths about Rochambeau's Army during the American Revolution, while shining light on a dynamic and interesting French officer.
