Description
“And the Streets Wore the Appearance of Gloom and Melancholy”: Streets as Shapers of Eighteenth-Century Public Health
Presented by: Molly Nebiolo, Ph.D. candidate in history at Northeastern University
Molly Nebiolo examines the changing forms of public health that existed from the settlement of preplanned cities, including: Charleston, Philadelphia, and Savannah under the "Grand Modell Scheme" created by John Locke in the 1670s. The study culminates in the 1790s, when cities created departments of public health.
Nebiolo argues that health was central to the creation of these early cities and the way they expanded over the course of the eighteenth century. This research makes for an interesting comparison to the "log city" known as the Valley Forge Encampment of 1777-1778. Nebiolo also looks at how public health in these city-spaces were informed by the built, urban environment in return.
