Step back in time with us at Fort DeRussy and listen to history come alive through the words of those who lived it. Join a National Park Ranger for a dramatic reading of a Civil War-era letter written by a soldier, nurse, or family member connected to the defenses of Washington.
Set against the backdrop of one of the city’s hidden earthen forts, this program brings to life the personal side of war—love, fear, boredom, and hope—through firsthand accounts from the people who lived through it.
Following the reading, engage in a guided discussion about life at the fort, the emotional toll of war, and the role of personal letters in keeping families and communities connected during one of America’s most divided times.
