George Washington Carver Day of Recognition: January 5th
George Washington Carver’s rise from slavery to scientific accomplishment has inspired millions since his death on January 5th, 1943. Join us on this 77th anniversary of Carver’s passing to learn more about his life. Iowa Public Television produced a new documentary in 2018, George Washington Carver: An Uncommon Life, which uncovers Carver’s complexities and reveals the full impact of his life and work. This film will be shown at the park Saturday and Sunday, January 4th and 5th at 1:00 p.m., and includes a discussion with a park ranger to explore the life and legacy of George Washington Carver and the purpose behind the establishment of George Washington Carver Recognition Day by President Harry S Truman.
This film features footage and interviews from Iowa State University, Simpson College, Tuskegee University, and George Washington Carver National Monument. With information uncovered at these institutions where Carver was born, studied and worked, George Washington Carver: An Uncommon Life seeks the true essence of Carver while assessing the real significance of his life and legacy.
“George Washington Carver is an inspiration,” said producer/director at Iowa Public Television, Laurel Bower in 2018. “That’s why it’s been a pleasure producing this documentary. His determination to achieve an education as a black man right after the Civil War and his life’s work helping those who needed it the most, these are the reasons we are still talking about him 75 years after his death.”
Born into slavery, George Washington Carver was a complex man who had many gifts: a true Renaissance man. He was a scientist, teacher, humanitarian, and an artist. He was a spiritual man, and a man of quiet perseverance-- Carver defied the odds.
