Aluminum Casting Demonstration

Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site

Special Event
  • Jul 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM

Historically, the casting of iron products was an exact craft, and the moulders who practiced it were among the highest paid of ironworkers. It took years to gain the necessary skills, and the craft was often passed from father to son.

Park staff demonstrate historical methods of making a sand mold, and pour aluminum into the sand molds at designated times.  Visitors will leave this experience with a better understanding of the craft of the moulder, and how they contributed to the furnace operation. Staff will be available to answer questions and give more information on the process.

Program is free and lasts approximately 45 minutes.
