Description
Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a wonderful winter walk above Vickery Creek on the Forest Loop Trail through an oak/hickory forest. From the Oxbo Road parking area, we will walk along the creek, cross over the stream, and climb the ridge. There will be several scenic vistas as we meander along the trail. With the leaves mostly gone, we will be able to better appreciate the beautiful, rugged topography of this area. Along the trail we will look for winter wildlife signs and identify some of the winter native plants. Join us and start the new year right!
Location: We will meet in the parking area and trail head in the City of Roswell Park on Oxbo Road. From the Historic Roswell Square travel north on Atlanta Street (Hwy 9) and Oxbo Road is at the bottom of the hill on the right. The parking lot is just 0.2 miles east from Atlanta St on Oxbo Road, on the right-hand side of the road.
Facilities: None
Difficulty: This hike is leisurely, but has a moderately strenuous uphill section at the start. These walks are quite slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. This walk is not suitable for very young children.
Bring: Remember to dress for the weather and wear comfortable hiking shoes. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and your activity level. A hat, scarf, and gloves might be a good idea. You may wish to bring water, binoculars, hand lens, notebook, and camera.
