Teacher Professional Development Opportunity: Teaching the Reconstruction Era
George Washington Carver National Monument is pleased to announce that the experts at Facing History and Ourselves will travel to Diamond to present the workshop entitled “Teaching the Reconstruction Era” on July 30th-31st, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This workshop explores the Reconstruction era in the United States and the construction of American identity.
In this workshop, we will explore how society recovered from the extraordinary division and trauma following the Civil War, when the values of democracy were most vulnerable. We will also have the benefit of discussing this tempestuous moment in history at the birthplace of renowned scientist, educator, and humanitarian George Washington Carver, who grew up during the Reconstruction era.
Following the workshop, teachers will become part of the Facing History educator network which provides access to a rich slate of educator resources and be able to borrow books and DVDs through the online lending library at no cost. Priority is given to current middle school (6th-8th) and high school (9th-12th) teachers. The workshop is free of charge but registration is required! Teachers will need to attend both days.
