Description

A Virtual Discussion: Join Fort Monroe National Monument and Civil War Trails on March 26, 2022 at 10 am (EDT) as we explore the history of the #AmericanCivilWar and notions of #Freedom exhibited by enslaved men, women, and children who sought freedom and rejected bondage 1861 – 1865, by seeking refuge behind US lines.

Registration required - send an email to: FOMR_Interpretation@nps.gov

The risk exhibited by #FreedomSeekers following the arrival of Frank Baker, James Townsend, and Shepard Mallory and the resulting argument made by Major General Benjamin Butler in the “Contraband Decision” bridges the long history of enslavement and emancipation considering the 1619 landing of "20. and Odd" enslaved Africans traded for victuals at #OldPointComfort 242 years earlier. These three brave men represent the tens of thousands of freedom seekers who followed establishing camps, slabtowns, churches, and schools across the country. We welcome four scholars to this virtual discussion illuminating the resilience of the black family, health, and wellness in the most challenging conditions. Each scholar will present on their research followed by a Q & A:

Dr. Holly A. Pinheiro, Furman University - The Families of the Civil War

Ms. Maya Moretta, Independent Scholar - Resilient Women of the Shirley Community at Fort Monroe

Ms. Linda Holmes, Independent Writer - Birthing Black Gifts: Safe in A Midwife’s Hands

Dr. Chandra Manning, Georgetown University - Family First in Civil War Contraband Camps

The Arc of Freedom, 1619 - 1865, represents a rich history connecting #FortMonroe to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program, the life and legacy of #HarrietTubman, as well as the #UNESCO Transatlantic Slave Trade Site of Memory Initiative, each exploring slavery, resistance, freedom, and healing.
