Description

As a 4-time national park artist-in-residence, Ben Rusnak will talk about his photography in the parks and how you can get the most out of your experiences in nature. Ben will discuss a deeply personal project about the tension between preserving and experiencing wild places, in the natural world and ourselves.

His photographs illustrate the dual — and often dueling — mandates that Congress gave the National Park Service during its founding in 1916: to preserve our national treasures and to provide for the enjoyment of the American people.

“I seek to capture that conflict through images of nature paired with people interacting with it — how we experience, enjoy, reshape, honor and diminish nature. And, consequently, how it changes us.” With that in mind, he’ll also incorporate the cycles of loss, genesis and rebirth that we all experience in our lives and how we can find healing in wilderness.
