Description

Burying grounds near the Buffalo River are filled with structures and symbols that are very different from the monuments found in city cemeteries. Created in an era before professionally-carved markers were available, families made their own grave markers from locally-quarried stone, using or adapting the symbols and traditions they brought from their states of origin. These pristine carvings tell stories about the people buried beneath them. This talk will give examples of early burial customs, stories and tombstone art (both primitive and professional) found along the Buffalo River.
