Description
After completing a routine smuggling voyage where the crew sold enslaved Africans in exchange for chocolate, sugar, and coffee in the Dutch colony of Suriname, three sailors on the schooner Rising Sun believed they had a chance to steal cargo from the ship. On the night of June 1, 1743, the men snuck below deck, murdered four people, and seized control of the vessel.
In researching the events of that day, historian Jared Ross Hardesty uncovered the mutiny's connection to Old North Church. Join Hardesty in this talk as he recounts the origins, events, and eventual fate of the Rising Sun’s final smuggling voyage and Old North Church's connection to slavery and the slave trade.
The story is told in his new book, Mutiny on the Rising Sun: A Tragic Tale of Slavery, Smuggling, and Chocolate.
