Join Matt Walker as he demonstrates the craft of blacksmithing throughout the day at the site of Andrew Redman's blacksmith shop. Andrew Redman was a enslaved worker on the plantation of William Lewis, the father of Lucinda Dogan (whose house will also be open on June 19th) and earned his freedom with the introduction of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Head to the blacksmith shop to learn more about Redman's life in the community of Groveton and participate in a special children's craft!

Fees

This event is free to attend.

Location

Parking for the blacksmith shop is located off of Groveton Road approximately 2 miles from the Henry Hill Visitor Center. From the visitor center, make a right out of the driveway followed by a left at the traffic light. When you reach the Dogan house (small white structure), make a left onto Groveton Road and travel about 1/4 mile down the road. Follow parking signs for the shop. You will need to walk a short distance from the parking area to the shop following an established trail. Please refrain from parking at tour stop 8 (Groveton Confederate Cemetery) as crossing Lee Highway can be very dangerous around this intersection.
