Description

Shiloh National Military Park will host its first BioBlitz program on Friday and Saturday, October 18th and 19th. A BioBlitz is an event where any nature enthusiast can participate in the identifying and inventorying of all plants, animals, and other living things through photography and sound.

“Shiloh Battlefield is home to over 50 species of reptiles and amphibians, 51 species of fish, over 215 species of birds, and 1,100 species of plants that reside within its 6,000 acre border,” said Superintendent Dale Wilkerson.  “The goal of this BioBlitz is to add additional species to the park’s species list, and we invite everyone to come out and enjoy this outdoor activity.”

All observations will be recorded and documented through the online database and website www.inaturalist.org. Through iNaturalist, anyone can upload pictures and sound bites to the project and have others assist in identifying the species. Amateur outdoorsmen as well as professional biologists are encouraged to participate in Shiloh Battlefield’s BioBlitz event. Observations will be taken along all monument trails, paved roads, fields, and the Tennessee River.   The iNaturalist-associated website of the event will be at the following url:

If you are interested in participating in the BioBlitz, please call the Shiloh Battlefield Education Center at 731-689-0015 to sign up for the event.  Participants should plan to meet each day at 7am at the Shiloh Education Center, which is the large, brown building located on Tennessee Highway 22 just south of Hagy Lane and north of the main park entrance on Pittsburg Landing Road. Specific instructions on how to record and upload photographs into the site, maps of trail routes, and safety precautions will be given during both days before the observations commence.
