Retracing the Footsteps of History Makers - A Civil Rights Commemoration

 

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site - in partnership with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock), UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law, UA Little Rock Black Law Students Association, Jefferson National Parks Association, Little Rock Central High School, J.A. Fair High School of College and Career Academies, Little Rock School District, Courtyard by Marriott, Mark Abernathy/Loca Luna, Patrick Oliver/Say It Loud! Readers and Writers, and Benito Lubazibwa/ReMix Ideas - announces free public events to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the desegregation crisis at Little Rock Central High School.  The programs will be held across Little Rock on Thursday, September 26 and Saturday, September 28 and are in cooperation with the 400 Years of African American History programming.

 

 Saturday, September 28 – 1:00 p.m. - Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

 

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site will host conscience conversation in the site’s visitor center with Joanne Bland, Lynda Blackmon Lowery and Rev. Peter Johnson.  Bland, co-founder and former director of the National Voting Rights Museum in Selma, Alabama and Blackmon Lowery, author of Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom, will discuss their roles in the civil rights movement as children, the struggle for voting rights in the 1960s, and the impact of the ballot today.  Other guests of honor include Nancy Rousseau, Little Rock Central High School principal, and H. Starr Robideau-Morales, Director of Personnel for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, and Judge Wiley A. Branton, Jr.  J.A. Fair High School Band, Choir and Theater will perform a selection of civil rights themed songs to begin the program. A book signing will follow this event.
