Description
Who were the white Unionists of Alabama? Why did they take their Unionist stand? Clayton Butler examines how these Alabamians maintained ties to the Union, as well how they were perceived by those in the Confederacy and in the United States. Most consequentially, Butler considers how Alabama Unionists experienced the war, its evolving goals, and later, how they understood Reconstruction.
Dr. Clayton Butler, University of Virginia, 2020
