Janet Yazzie (Diné Painter)
Eileen and Nilford Yatsatti (Zuni Potters)
-
Janet Yazzie is a Diné (Navajo) Painter who draws her influence from her childhood and time spent with her grandmother growing up. Using bright colors to depict the landscape of the Southwest and the Milky Way her memories come to life through her work.
- Eileen and Nilford Yatsatti are from the pueblo of Zuni and are well known for their distinctive style of pottery. Eileen began making pottery in 1973 and Nilford started making pottery in 1994 when he met Eileen. Their traditional techniques have been honed and perfected over the years. Their process begins when they harvest and process natural clays. Next is the creation of natural paints from iron-based minerals and applies them with yucca fibers. Lastly, the pieces are finished off, not in an electric kiln, but are fired outside with dung.
Meet and talk with the demonstrators while they create and showcase their art at the Desert View Watchtower on the South Rim at the Desert View developed area at the eastern entrance to the park.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their craft and art.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
