Description
After Dark in the Park: A Penetrating Look Inside Kīlauea Volcano
From their magmatic source in the Earth's mantle, Hawaiian volcanoes grow on the ocean floor to form some of the largest mountains on Earth. Understanding the internal structure and plumbing of these volcanoes is key to understanding where and how eruptions occur, as well as potential associated hazards. Join Roger Denlinger, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey as he describes an ongoing collaborative project with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to image the magma system beneath Kīlauea's summit, and its extension into the upper rift zones. As part of this project, 1,800 temporary seismic nodes (earthquake-detecting devices) have been placed across Kīlauea's summit and will record seismic signals generated by a Vibroseis truck during May 2023. The data will be analyzed with imaging methods similar to those common in the medical industry, such as CT scans.
