Description
Understanding the past is important in helping to move forward into the future. Historians at Montgomery History have done research around racial terror lynchings of African Americans that took place in Rockville, Maryland. This tragic history, and resulting generational trauma, can help inform our understanding of biophobia (the fear of the outdoors), a measurable physiological response from exposure to an object that is the source of fear.
Join Rock Creek Conservancy, Rock Creek Park, & Montgomery History as we host a virtual conversation at the intersection of race, history, and Rock Creek Park.
This event will examine the lynchings that took place in the region and the legacy of biophobia in communities of color. Speakers will include Sarah Hedlund and Ralph Buglass of Montgomery History; Mickey Fearn, an expert in the field of diversity and equity in parks and recreation, as well as Tyrhee Moore of Soul Trak Outdoors, a local organization that connects communities of color to outdoor spaces. The conversation will be moderated by Kym Elder of the National Park Service.
