Retracing the Footsteps of History Makers - A Civil Rights Commemoration
Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site - in partnership with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock), UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law, UA Little Rock Black Law Students Association, Jefferson National Parks Association, Little Rock Central High School, J.A. Fair High School of College and Career Academies, Little Rock School District, Courtyard by Marriott, Mark Abernathy/Loca Luna, Patrick Oliver/Say It Loud! Readers and Writers, and Benito Lubazibwa/ReMix Ideas - announces free public events to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the desegregation crisis at Little Rock Central High School. The programs will be held across Little Rock on Thursday, September 26 and Saturday, September 28 and are in cooperation with the 400 Years of African American History programming.
Thursday, September 26 – 6:30 p.m. – UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law
The UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law will host conscience conversation in the Friday Courtroom with Reverend Peter Johnson, Professor Sterling Plumpp and Judge Wiley A. Branton, Jr. Johnson, an NAACP worker in Louisiana and an SCLC activist alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Plumpp, a Mississippi-born poet and critic, and Branton, an Arkansas circuit judge, will discuss their roles in the civil rights movement. Omavi Shukur, a civil rights attorney and former legal clerk at the Equal Justice Initiative, will facilitate a conversation on applied strategies, impact on communities and activism today.
