Washita Battlefield National Historic Site

Among the captives from the Washita was Meotzi  (a.k.a. Monahsetah or Sally Ann). According to Ben Clark, Chief of Scouts,  "Custer picked out a fine looking one [Meotzi] and had her in his tent every night." Monahsetah also became a translator during negotiations with her people and the 7th Cavalry. Kimberly D. Schmidt will present her research on her new book on the ‘her’story of Monahsetah. Schmidt is the author of Magpie’s Blanket, a historical novel that depicts the Washita attack through the eyes of a young Cheyenne woman in part 1, and Cheyenne Chief Lawrence Hart during the centennial of the Washita in 1968 in part 2. Schmidt is the director of the Washington Community Scholars’ Center and professor of history at Eastern Mennonite University.
