Description
Our national parks hold some of the last remaining harbors of darkness and provide amazing opportunities to view the stars and planetary objects. Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area is one of these special places where you can enjoy the quiet, dark solitude of nature at night.
Big South Fork NRRA will be working with Dr. Mark Pitts, Senior Lecturer at the Eastern Kentucky University, to host a night sky program at the Bandy Creek Visitor Center Parking lot area on July 29th at 9PM. Join us and enjoy the spectacular dark sky conditions in the park to view the bright stars and summer constellations.
Participants should meet at the Bandy Creek Visitor Center Parking lot. Please bring a red-light flashlight, blanket, or chair for comfortable seating. We encourage you to bring binoculars to have your own personal view of the night sky. All ages are welcome to attend this free event, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
This event is subject to favorable clear sky weather conditions. In the event of inclement weather or cloud cover, night sky discussion will be hosted indoors at the Interpretation and Education building across from the Bandy Creek Visitor Center. Be sure to call the Bandy Creek Visitor Center, 423-286-7275, before 5:00 PM on the day of the event to confirm the status of the program.
