Echoes of the Past Genealogy and History Event

Explore modern connections to the generations of people who once called the Mammoth Cave region home! Attendees will have the chance to connect directly with historians, archivists, and genealogists, and explore tools that can help them trace their own family histories. Whether you have ancestral ties to the park or are simply curious about the region’s past, Echoes of the Past offers a meaningful opportunity to uncover personal connections to the history of Mammoth Cave and the communities that surround it.

This event is open to the public and no registration is required. Seasoned and aspiring genealogy enthusiasts alike are welcome to attend. Informative sessions will include:

• 8–10 a.m. — Interact with representatives from local historical societies and organizations in booth-style sessions. Learn how to access research tools and connect with archives that will help you explore your own genealogy. National Park Service staff will demonstrate how to access cemetery records and historic photographs from the park’s curatorial collection.
   
  10 a.m. — Gain insight and inspiration with the presentation, “Discovering Your Kentucky Ancestors”, from renowned genealogist J. Mark Lowe, Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association and Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research. Mr. Lowe is a professional genealogist and educator, who has taught at major genealogy institutes across the country and contributed to television series including Who Do You Think You Are? and African American Lives 2.
   
  11 a.m. – Journey to a nearby cemetery and see how mindful cleaning techniques can renew a headstone’s appearance to honor and preserve the stone’s history.
