Description

Coffee the George Washington Carver

Visit with park rangers and volunteers to enjoy some coffee or tea, and learn about the fascinating work of George Washngton Carver.

COFFEE WITH GEORGE WASHINGON CARVER: EXPRESSIONS OF THE SOUL

Enjoy a cup of hot coffee or tea as you learn about George Washington Carver’s artistic work, which he called “my soul’s expression”. George Washington Carver was an artist at heart and created pottery, needlework, scientific drawings, and paintings. He saved leftover fabric, string, and other materials to create art. Discover the paints, dyes, and stains he created from clay, and the patents he held. Learn if he excelled in portraits, still life, landscapes, or botanicals. A park ranger will present rarely seen photographs of George Washington Carver’s artwork and explain this creative aspect of his life.

Following the presentation, park volunteer Kay Graves will lead a hands-on activity making pocket bookmarks. This easy activity allows you to embroider a bookmark to take home. Coffee and hot tea will be served. Coffee With Carver is a free program, supported by the Carver Birthplace Association. Save the date for the next Coffee With Carver, on February 16, entitled To Fill the Empty Dinner Pail, featuring sweet potato and peanut products in the science lab.
