Description

Each year the park honors the memory of Dr. John Y. Simon, professor of history at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, editor of Grant’s letters and papers, and executive director of the Ulysses S. Grant Association from 1962 until his death in 2008. This year’s lecturer is James Bultema, President of the Ulysses S. Grant Association and Presidential Library. For over forty-five years Bultema has researched and collected photographic images of Grant, the most photographed American of the 19th century. Using selections from Grant’s writing, along with photographs, Bultema helps the viewer see a more complete picture of Grant, a living, breathing person dealing with everyday life as well as facing immense challenges.
