After the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, a campaign began to create a National Cemetery to rebury the Union dead with full honors. With the support of the Pennsylvania Governor, a committee formed to select an appropriate site for the cemetery and oversee the interment of Union remains.
On November 19th, 1863 a ceremony was held to dedicate the new cemetery. President Lincoln had been invited and asked only to say, “a few appropriate remarks.” His words would become known as the Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous presidential speeches in American history. In only 272 words, President Lincoln would not only honor the lives lost in the battle but define what those soldiers had been fighting for in words that still resonate to this day.
