Special Event
xplore the world of making art out of ocean trash, also known as marine debris, with two of our current Artists-in-Residence! Join Elaine Alder and Rebecca McGee Tuck for this immersive meet and greet. The park is excited to have two artists spotlighting the issue of marine debris during their respective residencies. Learn about the creative and ecological challenges of working with marine debris, and view finished and in-progress pieces of their artwork. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with the Park's artists-in-residence and explore the intersection of history, activism, and creativity.
Elaine Alder is a textile artist and sculptor whose work is driven by curiosity, tenderness, and hope for the future. Through their work, they explore empathy, reciprocity, and belonging, with a focus on kinship that transcends taxonomic boundaries. Currently, Elaine is working with salvaged marine debris and is building a sculpture of North Atlantic right whales to be installed in downtown New Bedford this summer.
Rebecca McGee Tuck is an artist and an activist who primarily uses debris that she collects along the wrack line of the coasts of Massachusetts. With her most recent work Tuck intends to raise awareness of the abuse that the ocean faces by transforming pieces of marine debris into works of art and symbols of hope, calling attention to the consequences of polluting our environment and encouraging a new commitment to action
