Description

This President’s Day (February 17th), join the staff of George Washington Birthplace National Monument in celebrating George Washington’s 288th birthday and the park’s 90th birthday.  The day’s activities include:

11:00 a.m. and 3:15 p.m-- Living Historians James Cameron, who portrays John Robeson, a free 18th century African-American and Dave Paldafino, who portrays James Madison, will discuss events of the American Revolution.  Each program is approximately 45 minutes and will be performed in the Visitor Center auditorium.

1:00 p.m.—Birthday Party with cake and punch at the Log House Tea Room

2:00 p.m.—Musical performance by Colonial Faire in the Visitor Center auditorium

Special tours of the Memorial House Museum will be given throughout the day.

“The Birthday Celebration is the park’s first special event of 2020 and we invite everyone to join us in remembering Washington, as well as commemorating the park’s 90th birthday,” says superintendent Melissa Cobern, “The Tea Room is a wonderful venue and we’re delighted to be able to open it to visitors again this year.”

Built by the Wakefield National Memorial Association in the 1930s, the Log House Tea Room is the traditional seat of Birthplace hospitality and is only open to the public once a year. The building is a fine example of Colonial Revival architecture and features a vaulted ceiling, rich wood paneling and numerous pieces of original furniture.

The park is open on February 17th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. As always, admission to the park is free and there is no charge for any of the Birthday Celebration events.

The Monument is located on Route 204, two miles off of Route 3, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg, VA and 11 miles west of Montross, VA.  For more information about the park, call 804-224-1732 or on the web go to www.nps.gov/gewa, Facebook or Twitter.
