Description

It is the time of year when ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel, Pterodroma sandwichensis) return to the summit of Haleakalā.

Join park rangers, staff from the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, and volunteers from The Friends of Haleakalā for a memorable night celebrating these amazing birds. There will be talks on ʻuaʻu biology, conservation, and the importance of dark night skies. After dark, there will then be night vision goggles, thermal imaging cameras, and a radar-equipped van to view the 'ua'u, as well as telescopes for viewing the night sky.

Arrival Information

For the best chance of parking near the event, we recommend arriving at the park entrance station between 3 PM and 4 PM. We anticipate long wait times at the entrance station.

What to Expect

  • 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM: A series of 15 minutes talks from 'ua'u experts and park rangers
  • 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM: Break for sunset
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM: Stations for 'ua'u and night sky viewing

What to Bring

  • Many warm, waterproof layers, as nighttime temperatures are typically around 40°F (4°C)
  • Any food and drink you may want. There is no food available for purchase in the Summit District, although there is a water bottle filling station near the program area.
  • AVOID bringing white light, as this will impact your night vision. Red light is provided in the program area.

Accessibility Information

This program takes place at 9,740 ft above sea level, so do not plan on attending this program if you have a health condition triggered by rapid elevation increase or went diving in the past 18 hours.  Nighttime temperatures regularly dip below 40°F (4°C). To get to the program location, it is a ~100 ft (30 m) walk from your car up a paved, ADA accessible ramp. The program area is paved but does not include any seating. Rangers at the visitor center are available for any additional questions.

Additional Notes

This event is weather-dependent and may be postponed due to unsafe or unfavorable conditions. Arrive early for the program, as we anticipate this will be a popular event.
