Cultural Demonstrators at Desert View: Gloria Chee - Navajo Carver/Beader and Leo Chee - Navajo Carver/Silversmith
Join us at the Desert View Watchtower, on Thursday September 22, and Friday, September 23, 2022, from 9 am to 4 pm, for a chance to meet Navajo artists Leo and Gloria Chee.
Gloria Chee - Navajo Beader, Carver and Weaver
Gloria works in the mediums of beading, carving and rug weaving. This week she will be demonstrating both wood carving and beading.
Gloria makes folk art and Navajo Ye’ii dolls. Her art is a continual learning process. She says art can teach one how to be patient and positive. When she demonstrates her work to the public, she encourages children to experiment, to imagine, to invent and use new materials to grow creatively.
Leo Chee - Navajo Carver and Silversmith
Leo is a self-taught artist and has been creating silver jewelry, with natural turquoise and other semi-precious stones for over 20 years.
All of his jewelry is contemporary, however he often uses traditional Navajo rug designs and very simple settings.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their handicrafts.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
Fees
This event is free to attend.
Location
Footpath repaving is taking place this week, so when you arrive, ask the best way to get to the Watchtower - at the outdoor visitor center, under the large shade structure, just beyond the north end of the main parking lot. Park rangers are staffing an information desk there, from 9 am to 4 pm (as staffing allows).
