Description

The Ranger Sessions are an ongoing series that is hosted by Ranger Jon Beebe and showcases a New Orleans musician to share their musical stylings and stories.  In this video, the session features University of New Orleans Professor and Director of the Music Department, Brent Rose.  Brent, who was formally a musician in the U.S. Marine Corps, has been performing professionally in New Orleans since 1991 and has been a very impactful mentor and musician within the community in New Orleans.

The duo of Ranger Jon and Professor Brent will perform "Bye, Bye, Blackbird" and a perennial favorite of Park visitors, "When the Saints Go Marching In."  The first song in the set was the #16 song of 1926 according to Pop Culture Madness. In 1982, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) posthumously awarded John Coltrane a Grammy Award of "Best Jazz Solo Performance" for the work on his album, Bye Bye Blackbird.

The unofficial anthem of New Orleans, "When the Saints Go Marching In," has come to characterize the city known as the birthplace of jazz. The song originated as a 19th century Protestant hymn and remains a message of revelation and redemption. In 1939 Louis Armstrong, or "Pops," transformed the spiritual into the timeless jazz tune of today.
