This Day in History: The Life of Ella Baker
As a child, Ella Baker moved from Norfolk, Virginia to Littleton, North Carolina to escape riots where whites attacked blacks. She would go on to be an important advisor and sloganeer for many civil rights organizations including the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee, and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. She said "strong people don't need strong leaders."
