Description

Join the National Park Service for a special Artillery Demonstration and Program at Camp Nelson National Monument.

The program will highlight the service of artillery during the Civil War, especially its integral connection to Camp Nelson. The site was initially established by the US Army as a supply and ordnance depot for the Army of the Ohio. The program will also detail the artillery units organized at the base and the use of cannons to defend Camp Nelson from enemy attacks.
The special event will feature firing demonstrations by the 12th United States Colored Heavy Artillery (Reactivated). Visitors can learn about each cannoneer's role on a gun role and the service of Black soldiers in artillery regiments.

The program is free and open to the public.
