Special Event
The purpose of the Cultural Demonstration Program is to elevate the voices of members from the traditionally associated tribes. Demonstrations allow visitors to Bandelier National Monument the opportunity to meet Native American artists while they practice traditional and modern crafts.
Roger and Diane Candelaria, from San Felipe Pueblo, are skilled artisans in pottery and jewelry making. Roger, who began working with clay at age 11, learned the craft from his grandmother, Candelario Montano. He specializes in creating storytellers, hand-coiled pots, animal figurines, and jewelry made from heishi and natural turquoise. Diane, married to Roger for over 30 years, learned pottery and jewelry-making from him, as well as from her own family. She focuses on making storytellers, friendship bowls, figurines, and Christmas ornaments. Together, they continue to share their art with their family.
Demonstrations are free and open to the public and take place on the back patio of the Bandelier visitor center.
This program is made possible by funding from the Friends of Bandelier National Monument to cover costs like demonstrators' travel and their time.
