Description

St. Joseph Day Celebration

with

The Mardi Gras Indians

The three day celebration, brought to you in partnership with the French Market corporation, continues with an interview conducted by Dianne Honore of Big Chief Darryl Montana and Big Chief Clarence "Delco" Dalcour.  The two legendary Big Chiefs discuss the history and the cultural impact that the Mardi Gras Indians have had on New Orleans from the late 1800's to present day.

Most people would be surprised to learn that New Orleans rhythm and blues has strong Indian ties. Tribes named the Wild Magnolias, Wild Tchoupitoulas, Golden Eagles, Yellow Pocohontas and Ninth Ward Hunters may draw a blank for most citizens of the World, but they rule the streets of New Orleans during Carnival.

Known since the late1800s as the "Mardi Gras Indians," the marching clubs merge African traditions with lore of the Native Americans, for whom they have a strong affinity. They are famous for their dazzling costumes, which are decked with thousands of dollars worth of feathers and beads, as well as powerful music. Sit back, relax, and be educated and then entertained by New Orleans' own Mardi Gras Indians.
