Talkin' Jazz with Fred Kasten: In Concert is a captivating blend of interesting talk and great music featuring top jazz artists in New Orleans, hosted monthly by award-winning radio producer and interviewer Fred Kasten.
This event will be a mix of interview and live performance.
Fred Kasten is an independent contributing radio producer/host at WWNO. After working at WWNO for over 20 years as an on-air talent, producer, and program director, Fred retired from full-time work in May of 2007. Fred is a native of Mobile, Alabama, a graduate of the University of Alabama, and a long-time resident of New Orleans. In addition to his work at WWNO, Fred develops independent audio projects from a home studio, producing radio features, commercials, and podcasts. Fred also does marketing and media consulting for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
Born in 1971 in North Wales, James Evans took up the piano at age 6, clarinet at age 12 and sax at 16. James attended the jazz course at Leeds Music College. Even before graduating in 1993 James had started touring Europe with Phil Mason's New Orleans All Stars. He moved to London in 1998 where he ran four groups of his own: The New Orleans Wizards, The Incredible String Four, The Rocket Five, and James Evans’ Octupal Odyssey, which featured James' own compositions and played many festivals across the UK. This included a performance of James’ compositions and arrangements played by his String 4 accompanied by the Welsh Chamber Orchestra. James moved to New Orleans in 2013 to pursue his lifelong love of the city and its music. Since his arrival he has played regularly with many local luminaries such as Leroy Jones, Gregg Stafford, Steve Pistorius, Kevin Lewis, Seva Venet, Lucien Barbarin, Tim Laughlin, Gerald French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band, Shannon Powell, Orange Kellin, Duke Heitger, Lars Edegran, The Shotgun Jazz Band, The Smoking Time Jazz Club, Tuba Skinny, and many more.
Larry Sieberth is a multi-talented solo pianist, sideman, accompanist, composer, and producer who is most at home in the jazz idiom but who adeptly performs across the musical spectrum. Sieberth has played in numerous combos over the years; his ensembles have ranged from small avant-garde groups to the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He currently tours and performs with Gerald French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band and with jazz singers Germaine Bazzle and Lena Prima (daughter of Louis). He has performed with a wide variety of local and internationally-known musicians, including Johnny Adams, Charles Neville, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Tony Dagradi, Johnny Vidacovich, Herlin Riley, Victor Goines, Don Vappie, Gatemouth Brown, Badal Roy, Hamid Drake, the Corpus Christi and Baton Rouge Symphonies, and Jason Marsalis. Sieberth is an accomplished composer, music director and arranger, with credits including “Bessie,” the Emmy-winning HBO film starring Queen Latifah, “The Warehouse Revisited,” and “Mudbound,” a Grammy-nominated film. He is a regular performer at clubs and at festivals locally and around the world. He has also served as music director and arranger for legends such as Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, and Robert Parker.
This program takes place inside the ground-floor Education Center of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, 400 Esplanade Ave. Admission is free and open to the public, seating is limited and offered first come, first serve.
