Description
The National Park Service was created on August 25, 1916 to "preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations." Over the hundred plus years, we've grown into more than 400 national parks and many programs that reach communities around the country—and even the world!
Come celebrate the National Park Service birthday with us at the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument on Sunday, August 25th, 2024.
The Life and Legacy of Brigadier General Charles Young (Ranger Talk) at 11 am
Join a Park Ranger, Saturday, July 20, 2024, for a 45-minute talk about the life and legacy of Brigadier General Charles Young.
Brigadier General Charles Young led an extraordinary life of firsts. He was the first African American national park superintendent, the first African American Colonel in the U.S. Army and the first African American military attaché. He served across the United States and other countries, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and Liberia.
On January 8, 1922, Young died in Lagos, Nigeria, while on special assignment as the military attaché to Liberia. He was buried with military honors the next day in Nigeria. On June 1, 1923, Young was reinterred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
